Polarization of 21cm Radiation from the Epoch of Reionization

چکیده
We consider the polarization of 21cm line radiation from the epoch of reionization due to both intrinsically polarized emission and secondary mechanisms. We argue that Thomson scattering of the 21cm quadrupole by the reionized universe is likely to produce the largest effect. The 21cm quadrupole is sourced by baryonic density fluctuations and the fluctuations in the ionization fraction due to discrete H II regions. Since Thomson scattering produces only E-type polarization and is achromatic, its unique fingerprint can in principle be separated from foregrounds associated with polarized synchrotron emission which should not be correlated with the cosmic signal. We estimate that Poisson fluctuations of H II regions at the end of reionization (zR ∼ 6–20) produce a brightness temperaturepolarization cross-correlation signal of ∼ 0.1 − 0.3 mK on angular scales of tens of arcminutes. This cross-correlation signal is within the instrument sensitivities of the future Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and close to the sensitivities of the forthcoming Mileura Widefield Array (MWA) and Low Frequency Array (LOFAR). Signatures of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations on 21cm Emission Background
The baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) prior to recombination should be imprinted onto the 21cm emission background from the epoch of reionization through the underlying density perturbations. Using an analytical approach for both matter power spectrum (CDM+baryons) and reionization process, we demonstrate the BAO induced signatures on the power spectrum of 21cm emission fluctuations. Future lo...

We discuss low frequency radio astronomy from the moon, predominantly in the context of studying the neutral intergalactic medium during cosmic reionization using the HI 21cm line of neutral hydrogen. The epoch of reionization is the next frontier in observational cosmology, and HI 21cm studies are recognized as the most direct probe of this key epoch in cosmic structure formation. Current cons...
متن کاملLight-cone anisotropy in 21cm fluctuations during the epoch of reionization
The delay in light travel time along the line of sight generates an anisotropy in the power spectrum of 21cm brightness fluctuations from the epoch of reionization. We show that when the fluctuations in the neutral hydrogen fraction become non-linear at the later stages of reionization, the light-cone anisotropy becomes of order unity on scales & 50 comoving Mpc. During this period the density ...
متن کاملWMAP3 Results and the Observability of Reionization at Redshifted 21cm
We present results from two new large scale simulations of the Epoch of Reionization based on the new 3 year WMAP cosmological parameters. For these parameters the peak of the reionization process falls below redshift 10, and hence above frequencies of 140 MHz, which should make it more easily observable with an instrument such as SKA. We present some global reionization history parameters and ...
متن کاملThe Spin Temperature and 21cm Brightness of the Intergalactic Medium in the Pre-reionization Era
We use numerical hydrodynamical simulations of early structure formation in a ΛCDM universe to investigate the spin temperature and 21cm brightness of the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the epoch of cosmic reionization, at z . 20. In the absence of any radiative heating, collisions between neutral hydrogen atoms can efficiently decouple the spin temperature from the CMB only in den...
